What forces keep the teeth together?

When diastemas form from expansion, these gaps usually close on their own, how does this happen?

edit: I think it's because gum tissue is elastic, forces such as expansion might stretch out the gum tissue but because it's elastic the stretched gum tissue will revert, pulling the teeth back together.
