I have had extraction braces many years ago and my face suffered as a result tremendously. I was not given any palate expender at the time and this happened when I was a child as I grew up my face got worse every year, I had complained about my looks changing and was told it was in my head and had been told I had BDD. Fast forward to last year I discovered the problem was a narrow/backward arch so I decided I need to fix this. My plan first is to reopen the spaces from where the teeth have been extracted using a removable appliance, when I am not wearing the appliance I am mewing. The second part of my plan to reverse the damage is to get MSE done (which should be sometime next year)

I recommend that anyone who has had extractions should reverse it as I will improve your face over time and your lower jaw will be able to slide back out (mine has moved forward nearly 5mm since my spaces on the upper arch are opened now to approx 5mm)

Yes I still have along way to go.

Yes I still have a way to go and I want to probably open the spaces atleast 10mm but most probably open them more than that as they do with fagga.

The molds are of both the upper arch only, yes progressing to 33mm from 29mm made a big impact in improving my health but i still have a way to go.  Its a shame how orthodontists get away with messing up peoples faces.  Btw I am 33 so mewing and reopening extraction spaces can work even at my age.

Thanks for your support, I will update again when more progress is made

What kind of removable appliance are you using?

There are also mandibular expanders available, but you have to advance slower since there is no suture to separate, which tends to result in more dental than skeletal changes. You might find this thread useful:  https://the-great-work.org/community/main-forum/how-to-encourage-the-mandibular-arch-to-keep-up-with-expansion-of-the-maxillary-arch/#

I thought that lower arch lateral expansion with appliances like DNA and ALF was common and an effective way to widen the mandible.

Such appliances certainly exist, but my understanding is that how far they can expand is more limited than maxillary appliances. You could read about Ronny Ead’s bad experience with upper and lower removable expanders in this thread (  https://the-great-work.org/community/case-discussions/cautionary-palate-expander-case/# ) or on his blog (  https://ronaldead.com/blog/2018/2/3/failed-attempt-at-adult-palatal-expansion ).

How many extractions did you go through? My orthodontist insisted on me extracting my wisdom teeth AFTER I completed my program – with great results I think -. I had my palate expanded by my orthodontist and definitely I was mostly attractive to women. But then after my wisdom teeth got extracted I can tell my face worsened quite a bit and I am now way less attractive than before! Hope I can make it better looking again through mewing though.

Really, I got completely mad when I discovered all this mewing thing and realised the reason why I was less attractive than before. My teeth got extracted at 19 or so and I’m 24 now.

Hello Everyone, Bael I had only two extractions, which at the time of the braces I was 11 years old and thought they were extracting baby teeth (orthodontist didn’t mention they were adult teeth on top of this I had pretty straight teeth, there was only 1 tooth that stuck out about 2mm which was no reason to extract). Sorry it took some time before I updated, since my reverse extraction journey I have  gained an extra 2mm increase in IMW, currently my imw is 35mm, the last update here it was 33mm. From the start of my journey my upper jaw has moved forwards 6mm and imw increased also 6mm.I have some photos here to the molds from the first to current.

no, I have not used a expender yet, currently only a space re gainer, I will be getting a expander after I finish pushing forwards to make the spaces, right now I’m on my last space re gainer appliance which should be finished by beginning to mid April so by the end of April or beginning of May I will start using a bone borne expander

Wow, Great progress!

Thanks a lot for sharing those pictures.

Why won’t you use a removable expander for further increasing your intermolare width?

Can you show a photo of your current appliance?

yes I will be increasing my IMW width with a expander after I finish opening the spaces, the expander will be bone borne so I wont get any tipping of the teeth

Something I discovered about the screws, you have to be careful when getting this appliance as the orthodontist will tell you the screw direction doesn’t make a difference and they will tell you the type of screw doesn’t make a difference, however that is untrue as you will feel the pressure in the direction that the screw is pushing and this should only be felt on the FRONT 6 teeth. If you get the appliance with the wrong screws you would end up pushing the back teeth more backwards and the front teeth forwards also, you do not want that, you want only to push forwards. I also do not like Dr hangs space re-gainer as it pushing the molars back aswell. If you watch the video opening extraction spaces by Dr Hang you will see what I mean by the appliance screws pushing the molars back (that is why the patients end up getting only 4-5mm of forward movement on upper jaw instead of the full 8mm.

@ani3000

Can you share the name of the ortho or company who provided this appliance please??  A google search for removable space regainer isn’t bringing up anything like that device for me.  And it is the EXACT thing I’ve been looking for.
