Hello,

I have a younger brother who has been having regular orthodontist treatment for about 1 year. He does not really practice mewing regularly. He is a professional football player. When he plays football he do mouth breathing 80% of the time.

Here is his teeth taken before the treatment.

Can you guys suggest me some alternatives that he could practise?

He does not really practice mewing regularly.

Then you found your answer? He should be mewing when he can. It’s okay if he mouth-breaths during soccer.

Does he have bruxism?

Football is such a dangerous sport, and not just for head injuries.  It seems that he has been wearing a thick/flat mouthguard.  This can pose a huge problem and likely why his chin has advanced so.  The front teeth appear bucked likely from biting down on a flat surface of his plastic weird thing they like to put into their mouths.  If he wants to keep playing, I highly suggest that he NOT BITE DOWN if he can avoid it.  The mouth guards are really problematic, because football players typically bit down hard on these huge flat pieces of rubber.  This is not good.  Just sayin’.  Compare/contrast before football and now.  You’ll likely see his front two teeth straight beforehand and his chin less forward.  Regardless, he can keep playing, but not bite down.  Get something thinner and molded to his teeth…but leave a gap of where you want his front teeth to go in the mold.  Ex…wax or something behind front 2 teeth and a little longer so they can stand up.  Kind of like Invisalign for a sports shield.  His maxilla seems high.  If it gets lowered a bit (closer to the floor)…then you can get his chin to come back a bit as his lower teeth come forward on the chin bone.  Anyway, it’s likely going to require some face pulling on the lower in conjunction with braces.  Don’t start that now and definitely don’t pull the chin forward.  It’s super tricky to do an advancement of teeth on the lower jaw and can have unintended consequences, so PM me once in braces.  But he can’t face pull yet and the problem is he shouldn’t put his tongue pressing up on the maxilla hard.  He may find that his tongue feels comfortable resting/pushing down right under itself?  With light pressures he may be able to push back his buck teeth?  However, you don’t want to even think about this if the root underlying problem is not yet resolved.  The back and forth of light pushing in then splaying out again is a weakening thing.  All teeth movement causes root absorption.  Central incisors typically have more root absorption than other teeth.  So, he needs to be careful as he might need dentures as he’s older.  Anyway, things to consider.  He also shouldn’t chew ice, eat carrots, etc.  He should not rest with his teeth touching.  The best thing to do is go to an orthodontist who looks to have craniofacial dystrophy.  Someone with a long face with a recessed chin.  However, sometimes these orthos don’t make patients look like themselves (standard to see this for experienced orthos)…but knee-jerk to a wider face.  Anyway, you can see patient before/afters on facebook or elsewhere.  Someone with a longer face and retruded chin will do a better job at getting this motion.  This is a perfect example of how a flat surface advances chins.  Likely, he has good energy and is rested from sleep.  That is not to say that his energy would decrease with moving the chin back.  Don’t expect this at all.  That is because the airway is more than just exterior features, but exercise is HUGE for helping airways.  Will have to post something on this.

@auxiliarus He should not be Mewing.  The maxilla is lifted too far from football gear and biting hard on it.  The tongue will feel better in the ideal position.  Pay close attention to what your body tells you.  You will feel best in pushing your tongue lightly around and seeing where your body says yes.  Your body wants to mold to where it should be.  If he feels better pushing with the tongue in areas on the lower jaw, I would not be surprised.  It doesn’t signify that we should push these areas, but typically resting there.  Ex. To kind of undo Mewing, stick out your tongue and angle it down.  It doesn’t really undo it (as it is exceptionally difficult).  However, there is no HOLY SPOT (one size fits all).  Even Dr. Mew talks about this in a vid.  Regardless, I give him little credence…though some of his ideas are useful, many are not.

You’re not making sense, he should mew when he can outside of football practice.

As for OP, I didn’t say this but I think he’s clenching his lower jaw against his upper jaw, this behavior would cause his lower jaw to move in front of his lower teeth.
